and a Video.
-The Glenmere Ocean House sits at the edge of the water
on the lower west side of the St. George Peninsula (15 miles S of Rockland)
overlooking a wide expanse of ocean where the St. George River meets
Muscongus Bay.
-Two miles over land is the village of Port Clyde where the
Monhegan Boat Line leaves for Monhegan Island.
-The tides rise and fall 10 feet.
-The shore is deep water
not tidal flats.
-A mooring just off shore with 24 hr. deep water access by arrangement.
-The house sleeps 4 but 2 are strongly preferred.
We rent it for a week, a month or sometimes an entire summer. It is usually
booked early and some guests return again and again.
The weekly rate is
$1,100. The only additional costs are required by
the State of Maine, namely, a 7% lodging tax. There is a refunded Security Deposit of $250.
Stays longer than a month can be negotiated for less than
the weekly rate.
Panorama, the Deck on Right

The picture above is a panorama looking north showing the spit (narrow
land reaching out into the water) and the
ocean at left. The deck is about 30 feet from the high water line
and well protected by huge rock outcroppings.

What people say about our place. Quotations from the Glenmere Ocean House Journal...
|
 |
A Visitor from England on honeymoon: "This is one of the most attractive
and peaceful places that I have ever stayed in. To be able to listen to the
sound of the waves as you fall asleep is a real treat and not easily
available back home."
A couple who spent two summers and then bought their own house: "This is
a truly magical spot. You are very lucky."
A young mom: "So far I have seen seals in Port Clyde harbor, lobsters
everywhere, a great blue heron, family of ducks with eight babies and
saw and heard two loons."
A retired couple: "We're from the New York/New Jersey area but for 40 years, it isn't summer
unless we come to Maine. For years we came with our three daughters,
then with our grandsons. These days, now that we have "retired" to
Manhattan, we love to come by ourselves. No place in Maine has been as
restful and pleasant as this lovely house."
Another couple: "We walked every day..saw deer, puffins, herons, even
a fox in the orchard. Thank you for letting us enjoy this very serene
place."

| Stunning Monhegan Island--Our View of It |
Return to Menu
Monhegan Island is twelve miles out to sea which takes about one
hour by boat which leaves from the Port Clyde main dock. It is peaceful,
beautiful, small, natural, and the essence of Maine untouched by
highways and byways. Easy or complicated hikes. Incredible views on
the open ocean side from high but safe "heads." Take the early boat and
stay until the dinner-time boat (but don't miss it!)

| Dining: Strictly our opinions |
Return to Menu
The East Wind Inn has a lovely setting for dining. Wine and liquor. Very
satisfying. Located in Tenants Harbor, nine minutes away.
Farmer's Restaurant is usually reliable for fresh seafood. Nine minutes also.
Cod End is a dockside place which prepares an entire lobster and clambake
dinner for you to take home and cook, or prepares food for you to eat
there. Again, nine minutes in Tenants Harbor.
The Harpoon is many things to many people. The dining room
has usually good food and service. Some of our guests rate it VERY highly.
The bar can be quite different depending on time of day. Just
minutes from the house.
The Dip Net is behind the Port Clyde General Store. Sea food always
the freshest. Small and can be crowded. Always satisfying.
Port Clyde General Store has sandwiches, soup, huge muffins in the
morning, and celebrated fish chowder (eat in or take out) on certain days.

| L.L. Bean, Windjammers, Bar Harbor & More! |
Return to Menu
The famous L.L.Bean store in Freeport is an hour and a half's drive. Bar Harbor
and Acadia National Park takes about 3 hours depending on traffic which can be
heavy during peak summer weeks. There are Windjammers out of Rockland and Camden
but whale watching requires a trip to Boothbay Harbor or Bar Harbor. The Golden
Road (famous dirt logging road) can be accessed from Millinocket and takes you
back to Moosehead Lake through rugged forests. Camden is one of Maine's
towns famous for shopping, fine summer homes, the "Camden Hills" and Mt. Battie
with its views and an elegantly populated and protected harbor--40 minute drive.
Lots of other ideas presented in our information book and regional publications at the house.

| By All Means, Get to the Farnsworth! |
Return to Menu
The Farnsworth museum in Rockland presents great New England art, especially
the Wyeth family and it is a well run organization with high quality displays
and a well stocked gift shop.

| You Really Don't Have to Leave! |
Return to Menu
If you are staying the summer, you will certainly want to take some trips
but if you are staying a week, we recommend staying put! That is what a
house by the water is all about, after all. The Glenmere Ocean House is
secluded, quiet, and allows walks along the road and along the water. Do the
Monhegan Island trip from nearby Port Clyde if you have not done it before and
just enjoy the house!

AND Now......... THE GLENMERE HOUSE PICTURE GALLERY |
This "Gallery" contains larger versions of the small
ones above. It is at the bottom of the web page because it takes time to load
these larger pictures. These are much better quality than the small ones and
once the entire web page has loaded, you can bounce back and forth quickly between the smaller ones
above with their descriptions and these larger ones without waiting for each
click to load separately.
If the picture has not finished loading, clicking inside
the empty frame will still return you to the smaller picture above.
